2. DISTRICTS

a. Monaco Ville

The Monaco Ville district is a picturesque and historic area located on the Rock, but also a tourist area with the Prince's Palace, its cathedral, the various institutions, its narrow alleys with its shops, bars and restaurants. The oceanographic museum is also located in this ancient medieval city, with many fascinating viewpoints. The buildings are generally historic buildings, without elevator neither parking space and consisting of a maximum of 3 to 4 floors. A few villas are also located in this very secure and exclusive area.

b. Carré d’Or & Monte-Carlo

Monte-Carlo is the main district of Monaco, famous for its legendary casino, its gardens and its thermal baths, as well as its prestigious luxury hotels such as the Hôtel de Paris, the Hermitage and the Metropole. The golden square area is part of this district with many jewelers, luxury shops and famous restaurants. It is also the most expensive place regarding real estate prices.

Being the nerve center of the Principality, very dynamic and lively, you will find many luxury residences mixing with "Belle Epoque" and contemporary architectures, as well as many head offices of famous companies. You will have all amenities around.

c. The Larvotto

The Larvotto district reflects Monaco’s postcard, like a small seaside resort, with its beach, its hotels, its restaurants and its nightclubs.

This district also includes an exhibition and congress center (Grimaldi Forum) and a performance hall (Le Sporting) as well as some of the most beautiful residences. It will soon welcome the sea extension, called L’Anse du Portier or Mareterra, and its new marina.

With its fantastic panoramic view and top level services, it is one of the most expensive district, with the golden square area.

d. The Port and Condamine districts

It is a shopping district with the charm of its paved streets, the market square (Place d'Armes) where daily producers from the region come to offer their products. There are also many shops, restaurants and bars.

The Condamine district is also home to the world-renowned Port-Hercule for the international events taking place there, such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Jumping and the Yacht Show.

The Monaco Yacht Club and Automobile Club, that are very exclusive clubs, are also located in this lively central district.

The very heterogeneous architectural style brings together old buildings and modern residences, some of them enjoy a splendid view on the port and the Formula 1 circuit.

e. Fontvieille district

This district is located on the west side of Monaco. This residential area also includes many offices and a few industries. It was partly built on the sea in the 80s, which makes it very modern. It is an ideal living-space for families thanks to its green spaces and in particular the Roseraie Princesse Grace, its sports facilities with the Louis II multisports stadium, its many shops and the Marquet beach located at the French border.

True city in the city, the architectural style is very homogeneous. It hosts charming residences with a neoprovençal style, offering large living-areas and a beautiful sea view for most of the apartments.

You will find an international heliport, as well as a marina located on the Rock’s cliff side, including many bars and restaurants.

f. The Jardin Exotique

The Jardin Exotique district is named after its famous park and is located at the northwest side of Monaco. This residential area overlooks the Principality and usually offers a beautiful panoramic view over the whole city.

The Princess Grace Hospital, the Princess Antoinette Park which is a real haven of peace for children, and some shops are also located in this area, that mainly consist of large modern residences, with still some old villas as well.

g. La Rousse / St Roman

La Rousse - Saint Roman is located on the eastern part of Monaco, just above the beaches which are easily accessible thanks to numerous public elevators.

The buildings are large and high, amongst which some recent luxury constructions, such as the Odeon Tower, offering a breathtaking view of Monte Carlo, the beaches, up to the Italian border.

This area is rapidly expanding with many development undergoing. It benefits from all the facilities including the Monte-Carlo Country-Club sports complex, located at the French border.

3. THE POPULATION

According to the census conducted in 2017, the very cosmopolitan population of Monaco was representing 38,300 individuals. Including more than 140 nationalities, the five most common nationalities in 2016 were:

2. monegasque with 9 259 residents
3. italian with 8 172 residents
4. british with 2 795 residents
5. swiss with 1 187 residents

48.9% of the residents are men and 51.1% are women. The midlle age is 46,5 years old. This country has the highest world density as well as the highest life expectancy !

4. GEOGRAPHIE / CLIMATE

Monaco is the 2nd smallest country in the world with a territory of just over 2km². This city-state is located on the French Riviera, landlocked in the South-East of France. The city of Nice is 20km to the west and the Italian border is less than 15km to the east.

Because Monaco is trapped between the Mediterranean Sea and the mountains of the Southern Alps, the climate is Mediterranean, which consists of a humid subtropical conditions with mild and humid winters and hot summers with lots of sun. The average yearly temperature is 16.3°C. The average temperature ranges from 10.2°C in January to 23.7°C in August. Temperatures are never too high, thanks to the sea wind. However, the nights can be very hot and humid (+20 °C) in summer because of the high sea temperature (up to 26 °C in August). The average annual sunshine is around 2,500-2,600 hours and the number of rainy days is low : 62 days per year.

5. POLICY

Monaco is an independent principality which has been a constitutional monarchy since 1911, with a Prince at the head of the state. The Executive power consists of a State Minister, who chairs a Council of Government composed of six members (himself and five Councillors-Ministers), responsible solely in front of the Prince.

According to the 1962 Constitution, the Prince shares legislative power with the National Council which is a unicameral parliament. The twenty-four members of this legislature are elected for five years under multi-member voting system with a part of proportional representation and by universal suffrage.

The Municipal Council is in charge of local affairs. It consists of an assembly of fifteen members elected for four years by universal suffrage and by multi-member voting system with two rounds but without proportional representation, chaired by the mayor.

The judiciary belongs to the Prince but wants to be completely independent. The Prince delegates full exercise of it to the courts and tribunals which administer justice in his behalf.

6. ECONOMY / SOCIAL

Monaco has formed a customs union with France since 1865 (the terms of which were specified in 1962) and its currency is the euro. Monaco's GDP for 2018 stands at 6.09 billion euros with a growth rate of 6.1% compared to 2017.

In 2018, the 4 main sectors of the economy are scientific and technical activities, administrative and support services (17.9%) of GDP, financial and insurance activities (15.9%), real estate activities (10 %) and construction (9.5%).

In 2018, Monaco had 56,303 employees, including 47,577 non-monegasque residents, representing a very important employer in the region.

In 2018, in terms of public finances, the state budget amounted to 1.254 billion euros in spending for 1.292 billion euros in revenue.

The state budget is mainly supplied by VAT (49.6%), legal transactions (13.4% from transfer taxes, civil and administrative acts, insurance taxes), commercial profits (11,66%, from profit tax) and the real estate sector, income from rental buildings and revenue from public car parks (8.6%).

The Principality’s promotion as an international sports destination has been confirmed through the organisation of prestigious sporting events such as the Formula One Grand Prix, the Monte-Carlo Rally, the Herculis International Athletics Meeting, the International Swimming Meeting, the Monte-Carlo Open Tennis tournament, the Monte-Carlo International Show-Jumping Event, the Monaco Classic Week...

Worthy of the greatest European capitals, the Principality’s cultural entities offer diverse and high quality programs throughout the year: the Monte-Carlo Ballet Company, Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, Monte-Carlo Opera, the Princess Grace Theatre, Printemps des Arts festival, etc.

Various events such as the Monaco Dance Forum, the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival and Monte-Carlo Sporting Summer Festival, have turned into international events.

A hub of monegasque museums hold unique and original exhibitions: the oceanographic Museum, the Prehistoric Anthropology Museum, the Museum of Philately and Numismatics, New National Museum of Monaco (N.M.N.M.) in Villa Sauber and Villa Paloma, the Private Collection of Vintage Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, the Naval Museum and prestigious exhibitions at the Monaco Grimaldi Forum.

B) High quality medical and care infrastructures

Health statistics place the Principality at the head of O.E.C.D. countries, and Monaco maintains this level in terms of prevention, check-ups and the quality of its system of care.

Medical care is provided at several facilities well-known and recognized for their excellence :

• Princess Grace Hospital (C.H.P.G.) offers local healthcare services and various key specialisations ;
• Monaco Institute of Sports Medicine & Surgery ;
• Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Center;
• Haemodialysis Centre.

A wide range of healthcare services are also offered in town, covering all medical professions

C) School system

The Prince’s Government places Education at the top of its priorities in preparing the Principality’s future. A return on its on-going investments, both in human resources and in equipment, has been discernible for several decades now, demonstrated by the excellent results achieved in final examinations and later university studies.

The Principality’s educational facilities are approved as “French educational schools abroad”. As such, timetables, curricula and diplomas offered conform to those defined by the French National Education. The Monegasque education system, however, has some specific features that contribute to the quality of the education provided. These include an emphasis on teaching English classes from kindergarten to high-school, and international classes are opened from middle school. Some international schools following the American education program have “French as a foreign language”, which helps non-French-speaking pupils to integrate.

The Principality has 9 public schools: 6 kindergarten and primary schools, a middle-school, a high- school proposing general and technological studies, and a hotel and catering vocational high-school. To extand this offer, there are 2 private denominational institutions under contract with the State

Education is further completed by private structures and special entities. The International School of Monaco offers bilingual teaching (English-French) from kindergarten onwards.

Higher education is also available at the International University of Monaco (Bachelors, Masters, MBA), the École Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques which awards higher diplomas in the arts including a Masters degree, and the Institut de Formation en Soins Infirmiers at the Princess Grace Hospital, to prepare the diploma of State-registered nurse. The public High-school offers post-baccalauréat classes in Hospitality and service industries.
