The revival of the “Place du Casino” of Monte-Carlo

What will the square look like after the renovation works?

The new esplanade will be largely pedestrian and planted with trees; the center of the square will be flattened, leading to the disappearance of the famous "camembert", which will give way to about twenty palm trees (some of which will be planted in pots to move them temporarily), and used in particular to separate the pedestrian area from cars.

Indeed, traffic will be maintained in both directions on the “Hôtel de Paris” side, while the parking spaces in front of it will be maintained.

Landscaper Michel Desvigne, who also redesigned the Casino gardens last year, plans to cover the square with beige stones and a new fountain in the center will be integrated into the artwork of Anish Kapoor already present in the previous configuration.

There are several aims to this change:

First of all, it will extend the pedestrian space for tourists and visitors and guarantee them greater safety by preventing cars from passing in front of the Casino or the “Café de Paris”.

Secondly, the idea is to have a more suitable place for events such as the two big events expected in July this year, namely F(ê)aîtes de la Danse and the concert of Céline Dion. It should be noted that the Formula 1 Grand Prix will not be sacrified and its layout will not be changed.

In addition to the major events, the “Place du Casino” could, once in a while, host smaller and private events, such as car launches, cocktails, ... as Jean-Luc Biamonti, CEO of the “Société des Bains de Mer”, owner of this prestigious space, explained.

Because the “Place du Casino” is an iconic place of Monaco and the “Golden Square” in particular, its transformation is a challenge that will contribute to making it more pleasant, greener and safer. This development will also reinforce the role of this square as a major spot to live in the Principality.
