The Principality of Monaco comprised 38,350 inhabitants!

This figure was published by Ministerial Decree of April 19th, 2021 relating to the annual update of the official population figure for the Principality of Monaco. IMSEE, the Monegasque institute of statistics, has estimated that on December 31st, 2020 the number of people living in the territory came to 38,350. The institute based its estimate on the latest figure from the population census carried out in 2016 and added demographic and migratory data collected from the Town Hall registry office and the Police Department respectively.

After a very slight drop in 2019, the population goes on, growing steadily (+2,8% compared to 2016) thanks, in particular, to an increasingly substantial housing stock. In the state-owned housing sector, for the year 2020, the “Picapeira” building was delivered (14 flats) in the “La Rousse” district, we also recorded the increased heights of the “Jardins d'Apolline”. Regarding the non-regulated sector (private sector), three new developments have been delivered, the “Pavillon France” in Monaco-Ville (4 flats), the Winch on Quai Albert I (5 flats) and the “Palais de la Plage”, facing the “Larvotto” beaches (14 flats), all of which are intended for rental.

All of these districts host a cosmopolitan population, with almost 140 nationalities, the main ones being from the European continent. Monegasques represent 21,85% of this population, i.e. 8,378 residents, and the foreign communities account for 78,15%, the most numerous of which are made up of 9,286 residents of French nationality (i.e. 24,2% of the population), 8,172 of Italian nationality and 2,795 of British nationality.

Some of these nationals have several nationalities (excluding Monegasque citizenship) and can therefore be counted in as many communities as they have nationalities. Monegasques, on the other hand, are only counted in the Monegasque community, whether they have one or several nationalities.

Several other European communities (Swiss, Belgian, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Greek and Spanish) have several hundred nationals each, as well as non-Europeans (Russian, American and Canadian).

This growth will undoubtedly continue in the coming years with the delivery of major new developments such as “Testimonio II”, “Bay House”, “Grand Ida”, and the new “Mareterra” district, to name but a few.
