Îlot Pasteur: The Wurtemberg footbridge revealed

The Ilôt Pasteur* project is part of the Principality's urban transformation and its desire to promote soft mobility. As proof of this, it will be possible in a few years to walk to Fontvieille district from the Jardin Exotique and the new Princess Grace Hospital via this new complex.

How can this be done? By linking the underground Salines Gallery** to an aerial footbridge thanks to a series of lifts installed at both ends of the project. The Wurtemberg footbridge replaces the Wurtemberg bridge, which was destroyed in the early 2000s, and will be located between the cemetery and the future Charles III high school, located on Avenue Pasteur and Avenue de Fontvieille respectively.

It will be 65 metres long, more than 11 metres above the ground and will be accessible to pedestrians and people with reduced mobility thanks to a continuous slope of 4%.

In 2017, the Advisory Board considered that the design was not light enough regarding an aesthetics aspect. A second, lighter and more aerial version was produced and unanimously adopted by the Municipal Council at the end of July 2021, as it now fits better into the urban environment.

* Nearly twenty years ago, the old railway line located at the western entrance to the Principality was disused, from the avenue de Fontvieille to the cliff, where a new urban complex will emerge in a few years: the Ilôt Pasteur.

This architectural complex will have a high school, offices and the future Léo Ferré concert hall, and will provide a pleasant place to walk.
